May 2, 2022 LA GRANDE, Ore. – Nine Oregon lawmakers will visit EOU on May 10 to hear directly from students, employees and community members about services for underrepresented students.
House Bill 2590 created the Joint Task Force On Student Success for Underrepresented Students in Higher Education and commissioned its members with visiting all public universities and colleges this spring to identify gaps in higher education.
Rep. Teresa Alonso Leon chairs the committee, while Sens. Michael Dembrow, Lynn Findley, Art Robinson, Rob Wagner and Reps. Mark Owens, Ricki Ruiz and Jack Zika serve as members. Sen. Lew Frederick is an ex-officio member.
The legislators will engage with community leaders and university employees in separate morning sessions, and will hold student roundtable discussions in the afternoon⇁all in the David Gilbert Center. Following a campus tour, the legislators will hear testimony in a public open forum from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Ackerman Hall, room 210.
All of the sessions are open to the public. Details are available at olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2021I1/Committees/JTUSHE.
Also in May, EOU will host a team from the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS). The group is consulting with the Oregon Council of Presidents and the Oregon Community College Association to conduct a study of higher education in the state.
Consultants will meet with four distinct constituencies at each campus and gather data for the study, which seeks strategies for improving financial stability and expanding collaboration among institutions. NCHEMS will compare its findings with national trends and assess how each campus meets its community’s needs.
