April 29, 2022 LA GRANDE, Ore. – It’s spring at Eastern Oregon University, and a range of arts, athletics and scholarly events are scheduled on campus throughout May. May 5: Bean Gilsdorf Artist Talk (6pm, Huber Auditorium)
Artist Bean Gilsdorf will serve as juror for the Nightingale Gallery’s All-Campus Juried Student Art Exhibition this year. Her talk is free and open to the public. Find details at eou.edu/news-press/oregon-artist-shares-her-creative-story-at-eou.
May 10: Student Voices Task Force Open Forum (5:30-7pm, Gilbert Center)
Nine Oregon lawmakers will visit EOU to hear directly from students, employees and community members about services for underrepresented students. The task force is visiting all public universities and colleges this spring to identify gaps in higher education. Following round table meetings with students in the afternoon, the legislators will hear testimony in a public open forum. May 12: Daniel Costie Colloquium (4pm, Ackerman 210)
Daniel Costie teaches Public Administration at EOU, and will give a talk titled “Advocacy Coalitions in the Twittersphere” in-person for this edition of EOU Colloquium. This talk is free and open to the public. Visit eou.edu/colloquium for more information.
May 13: All-Campus Juried Student Art Exhibition Reception (5-7pm, Nightingale Gallery)
Student artists from across disciplines submit artwork to be judged in this annual exhibition. Guest juror Bean Gilsdorf will present awards in Nightingale Gallery during the reception. May 14: Blue & Gold Weekend (12-7pm, near Quinn Coliseum)
The 2nd annual Blue and Gold Weekend features a line-up of athletics activities for alumni, students and fans of all ages. On Friday, May 13, EOU Athletics will host a student-athlete challenge near Quinn Coliseum that fans are welcomed to attend. There will be a live DJ, spike ball tournament, barbecue, and other events. On Saturday, May 14, events begin at 9am and run through 7pm! The wrestling team hosts a Cornhole Tournament all day, and the Mary Horn Centsable Wealth Management Tailgate Zone opens at noon with a beer garden, live DJ, family fun fest and silent auction! May 14: Blue & Gold Soccer Alumni Games (1 & 3pm, Community Stadium)
Women’s soccer alumni play against current student-athletes at 1pm, and the men play at 3pm in Community Stadium. Contact EOU Athletics for ticket information.
May 14: Blue & Gold Football Game (6pm, Community Stadium)
The Mountie football team spars in this home turf scrimmage to close out Blue and Gold Weekend. Contact EOU Athletics for ticket information.
May 14-22: STEM Week
The GO-STEM Hub at EOU is celebrating STE(A)M Week alongside peers throughout Oregon. Downloadable workbooks are available in English and Spanish, as well as classroom and at-home activities for a range of ages. Learn more at stemoregon.org/stem-week-2022 and register a local event!
May 18: Spring Symposium (9am-1pm, Loso Hall)
Upperclassmen from nearly every discipline participate in this annual showcase of EOU scholarly achievement. Talks, posters, performances and demonstrations take place throughout the event. This event is free and open to the public. Visit eou.edu/symposium for additional information.
May 18-19: Board of Trustees meeting (Inlow 201)
EOU’s Board of Trustees convenes for its final regular meeting of the academic year. The meeting will be spread across two days, running from 1 to 5pm on May 18 and from 9am to 12pm on May 19. This meeting is open to the public. The meeting can also be viewed remotely via livestream and a recording of the meeting will be available for viewing following the meeting. May 18: EOU Celebration of Academic Excellence (7pm, Hoke Community Room)
Three student honor societies, Phi Kappa Phi, Pinnacle and Sigma Tau Delta, will induct this year’s class of new members during a shared ceremony. While induction to these societies is by invitation only, we welcome the family and friends of inductees as well as the entire EOU community to join us in celebrating the academic achievements of these students. May 19-22: “RENT” (7pm, McKenzie Theatre)
The EOU Theatre Department presents Jonathan Larson’s iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning musical that shaped a generation of audiences and taught us all to measure our life in love. Set in the East Village of New York City, “Rent” is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “Rent” has become a pop cultural phenomenon, with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. May 19-20: CCRP Spring Professional Development
EOU faculty and staff are invited to attend two days of training provided by the College of Education’s Center for Culturally Responsive Practices. May 21: Rita Monahan Wellness Event (10am-1pm, Dorian Park)
The Rita Monahan Memorial Foundation hosts this annual event featuring local vendors, health promotion booths, and a 5k Color Walk/Run. The color walk/run will begin by Dorian Park at 10am, and will finish back on campus where health and lifestyle booths will be open for the community to enjoy. May 21: CAHSS Arts Festival: Live Music, Food & Beer Trucks, Crafts Fest, Alumni Activities (12pm, Gilbert/Gilbert Plaza)
The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences hosts the first-ever Arts Festival with a range of activities Friday and Saturday. Saturday activities begin at noon, when the Craft Fair opens in Gilbert Center with at least 10 vendors and an interactive table hosted by the EOU Art Club. Food and beer trucks will be open until 6pm in the Gilbert Plaza.
