LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University will recognize Juneteenth National Independence Day as an official university holiday on Monday, June 19, 2023. Offices will be closed and classes will not be held.
Inclusiveness, diverse backgrounds, and mutual respect are essential values and principles that foster a supportive and inclusive community. By recognizing Juneteenth EOU is demonstrating its commitment to these ideals and promotes the understanding that all cultures and people have a rich and significant history. The recognition of this holiday is one way that EOU provides our students and employees the opportunity to acknowledge and recognize the fullness of our country’s sometimes difficult past.
Observing Juneteenth also allows us a moment to reflect on how we can continue to do our part in advancing racial equity by acknowledging the inequalities and injustices our communities face through our shared commitment to creating a university community that supports diversity and inclusion at all levels.
