LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University is pleased to announce the appointment of Rae Ette Newman, Ph.D., as the new Dean of the College of Education, effective May 1, 2024. Newman has been in the position as interim since July 2022, and will continue her role in leading the College towards achieving its strategic goals.
“Rae Ette’s deep commitment to Eastern Oregon University and her profound understanding of the challenges and opportunities in education today make her the perfect choice to lead the College of Education,” said Peter Geissinger, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Her leadership will be important as we continue to enhance our education programs and strengthen our community engagement.”
Newman has been heavily involved in education programs and teacher preparation throughout her career. She currently serves as Chair of Oregon’s Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC), which oversees K-12 educator preparation programs throughout the state. Prior to her role as interim dean, she served as Department Chair of the College of Education, as Director of Accreditation, and has led several education initiatives at EOU. Under her leadership, the College of Education aims to further its mission of enriching academic quality in eastern Oregon and supporting experiential learning opportunities for its students.
“I am honored to lead the College of Education and build on its strong foundation of fostering educational excellence and community involvement,” Newman said. “I look forward to working with our exceptional staff and students to advance our strategic goals and make a significant impact in the educational sector.”
Newman earned her Master in Special Education and Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education with a dual major in Special Education Early Childhood and General Education Pre-K through Grade 3 from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.
