2007 Alumni Award Recipients

Ronald James Pond

Distinguished Alumni Award

Dr. Ronald James Pond graduated from EOSC in 1974. He is one of the first Native American students to receive a degree from Eastern’s Native American Program. He helped create the Speel-Ya Native American Student Council, which provides social and cultural support for new and returning students through a variety of activities, including the annual Spring Celebration Powwow and Friendship Feast. Ronald is a life-long advocate for Native American traditions and is actively involved in youth organizations. He is a faculty member at Washington State University.


Robert Peshall

Alumni Merit Award

Robert Peshall received a bachelor’s degree in 1955 and earned his Masters in Teacher Education (MTE) the following year. During his time at Eastern, he was a very active student. In addition to being a member of the student council, he sang in the choir, was a member of the band, and was the school photographer. Robert is an active ambassador for EOU and has been for many years. He recently came to campus to collect application packets to pass out to students in his region and in 2007, he established an Evensong challenge grant to help restore the Grand Staircase.


Arthur Derbyshire

Alumni Merit Award

Art Derbyshire, EOU class of 1969, is a retired teacher and coach living in Hermiston. He graduated from Drain High School in 1964 and attended Eastern from 1964 – 69, majoring in biology. He then taught eight years at Elkton and 22 at Stanfield High. He as honored as the outstanding science teacher in Oregon by the Oregon High School Science Teachers Association for his superb work in the classroom from 1989-1990. Not only was Art recognized as one of the state’s best science teachers, but his Stanfield boys track team won the 2A championship in 1999, and were district champions six times throughout his career. Who’s Who in Oregon Track and Field named his 1999 and 2001 teams as the number one 2A dual team, and named Art coach of the year for both years. The Stanfield School Board dedicated their new track facility in his name this year.


Peter Wordelman

University Service Award

Peter Wordelman, professor of music at EOU, teaches applied voice and conducting courses. He has taken more than 140 students on international tours and educational outreach programs to Eastern Europe, Ecuador and most recently, China. In 2001, he received several honors including the Distinguished Instructional Faculty Award as well as a Fulbright scholarship award. Peter is an active adjudicator and guest conductor and regularly performs at festivals across the Northwest, in addition to a multicultural choral music reading session at the National American Choral Directors Association convention and a performance at the Rome Festival in Italy.


U.S. Bank, La Grande Branch

Community Partner Award

US Bank plays an integral role in the life of Eastern Oregon University. The La Grande branch has supported a number of on-campus programs including the EOU Foundation, Booster Club and the Summer Youth Theatre program. Through their generous cash and volunteer contributions, US Bank has helped create and sustain several unique opportunities for EOU students, clubs and community members. EOU is proud to formally recognize this exceptional organization for their long-lived and on-going Mountaineer enthusiasm.
