Dr. Laurie Marker, founder and executive director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund, is one of the world’s leading experts on the fastest land animal. After graduating from EOU’s distance education program in 1990, Laurie sold
everything she owned to start CCF in Namibia, Africa. She went on to earn a doctorate from Oxford University in England and has since pioneered new ideas in conservation and formed cooperative alliances on behalf of the cheetah that had never been possible before. In 23 years, Laurie has led her organization from its humble beginnings in a tiny farmhouse to what it is today: an unparalleled model for predator conservation. Her many accolades include being named among Time magazine’s “Heroes for the Planet” in 2000. More recently she received the 2010 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement and was also a finalist for the BBC World Challenge.
Don and Zola Dunbar, of Portland have been quiet yet strong supporters of EOU for many years. With a combined 68-year career in public education, the Dunbars have experienced the influence of many EOU graduates in classrooms and school administration across the state. Knowing firsthand the positive impact of scholarships, the Dunbars established an endowed award through the EOU Foundation to assist students studying to become elementary school teachers. Their enthusiasm, advocacy, support and generous giving is inspiring and has made a significant difference in many lives. As model teachers, parents and professionals, they are wonderful examples of EOU alumni.

He served as a board member, director, committee chair and president of the Foundation. In 2012, he was granted the status of “Trustee Emeritus” for his honorable service and commitment to EOU. Additionally, Bob and his wife Bev have generously established an endowed scholarship through the EOU Foundation enabling single parents to achieve their dream of a college education.

John truly represents the Mountaineer spirit and Eastern pride!
Lee Insko, of Elgin, joined Eastern’s team in 1968 as a professor and football coach for the Mountaineers. Well-known in the community for his leadership in the classroom and on the field, it is Lee’s passion for helping students succeed that sets him apart. His career at EOU spanned 25 years, and while winning in the athletic arena was always important, it never took priority over building strength of character. His personal engagement with students is what consistently helped bring the best out in them. Lee was much more than an instructor; he positively influenced countless individuals through his example and passion for success with integrity.
