“All-Campus Juried Student Exhibition” opens in Nightingale May 15

The Nightingale Gallery at Eastern Oregon University is concluding its season with the annual “All-Campus Juried Student Exhibition” May 15 through June 12.

An opening reception is planned from 6-8 p.m., Friday, May 15, with presentation of awards at 6:30 in the gallery in Loso Hall.

The exhibit features work by EOU students from a variety of disciplines and is juried by Karl Davis, executive director of Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts in Pendleton. He holds a bachelor of arts from Portland State University and a master of arts from the University of Alberta, both in art history. He has over a decade of art gallery and exhibition experience. While at PSU he was the coordinator of the Littman/White Galleries and between 2006-2010 was the director of Froelick Gallery in Portland.

Davis’ research at the University of Alberta centered on surrealism and its connection to art of the Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations. While at the U of A he was a founding member of the Art and Design Graduate Student Association, helping to organize national art history symposiums and graduate student exhibitions. He has served on the advisory council of the Oregon Arts Commission Visual Arts Ecology of Oregon, and is currently sitting on the Disjecta Biennial Curator Selection Committee.

Davis will present a public talk on his work at 6 p.m., Monday, May 11 in Huber Auditorium in Badgley Hall. The presentation is free and open to the public.

In addition to selecting pieces to include in the exhibit, Davis will choose several works to be recognized with cash awards. The fifth annual Kathelene Galloway Memorial Scholarship will also be presented, along with the sixth annual Joseph Dickerson Memorial Award.

The Kathelene Galloway Memorial Scholarship is a $500 award presented to a sophomore or junior level art major who exhibits exemplary technical and conceptual skill. The award is made in memory of Galloway who was a professor of printmaking and drawing at EOU for over a decade. Galloway passed away suddenly in December 2009. She was a highly dedicated and much loved artist, teacher and colleague who was a passionate advocate for her students, art, artists and EOU. She lived to share knowledge and the wonder that comes with discovery, and exemplified the excellence to which art faculty encourage students to endeavor.

The Joseph Dickerson Memorial Award is in memory of Joe Dickerson, an EOU freshman tragically killed in a 2009 auto accident. Following the tremendous loss of their son, Joe’s parents, Doug and Kyla Dickerson, made a generous gift of funds to the EOU art program. Joe was a model student whose creative energy and enthusiasm for learning was infectious. In light of this, the EOU art program chose to use the funds to endow an award in his name to be presented annually to a student who the faculty feels best exemplifies Joe’s dedication, curiosity and creative spirit.
