Experiential Leaning:As a Ceramic Studio Assistant, you will gain practical experience in various ceramic processes, including recycling clay, loading and unloading kilns, maintaining kiln shelves, firing kilns, glaze mixing, and maintaining equipment and tools within the studio. This role provides an excellent opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge from your coursework to real-world studio tasks, enhancing your understanding of ceramic arts.
Professional Development:This position offers numerous professional development opportunities. You will receive job-specific training provided by the Visual Performing Arts Education Program and participate in University-wide training events. Additionally, you will have access to multicultural-sponsored training activities, career exploration activities via Career Services, and resume reviews with Career Services and/or WorkSource Oregon. These experiences will help you build professional competencies such as time management, organization, and adherence to safety standards, preparing you for diverse career paths in the arts.
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:– Work one-on-one with the Visual Performing Arts Education Assistant daily on various projects and tasks.
– Sweep, mop, and spray down studio floors.
– Assist with loading/unloading kilns and helping fire them.
– Assist with glazes and recycling clay.
– Learn and implement special cleaning methods.
– Organize and label tools and materials.
– Learn how to use basic hand tools and run small equipment.
– Follow safety protocols specific to the ceramic studio environment.
Minimum Qualifications:– Must be an on-campus student who has federal financial aid-approved work-study awarded.
– Excellent organizational skills.
– Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
– Experience with following detailed instructions and multitasking.
– Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
– Availability to work scheduled shifts between Monday – Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, depending on student availability.
Preferred Qualifications:– Experience in a ceramic studio.
– Experience organizing and cleaning physical spaces.
– Strong problem-solving skills, great attention to detail, and self-starter attitude.
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:– Assist in maintaining a clean and organized studio environment.
– Support the Educational Program Assistant in preparing materials and equipment for classes and workshops.
– Participate in the recycling of clay and preparation of glazes.
– Help with the loading and unloading of kilns and monitor the firing process.
– Maintain and organize tools and materials, ensuring they are labeled and stored properly.
– Learn and adhere to safety protocols specific to the ceramic studio environment.
