Experiential Learning:Students will develop skills such as plant taxonomy, data entry, database management, specimen archival, specimen photography, as well as plant husbandry and propagation that will be applicable for biology students aiming to develop plant identification, specialized photography, and data management skills.
Professional Development:Students will be trained in basic plant taxonomy, specimen archival, museum curation, and data entry as well as watering and caring for live plants.
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:Student employees will assist with the digital and physical archival of preserved plant specimens in the EOU Herbarium and with the care of live plants in the EOU Greenhouse. Technicians will enter data from a backlog of mounted herbarium specimens into a museum database that will be publicly served across the country. Technicians will maintain the physical herbarium collection by filing, entering, mounting, and photographing preserved plant specimens. Technicians will also help to maintain and clean the herbarium dataset containing over 10,000 records in preparation for publication. Work in the greenhouse may include watering, fertilizing, and propagating existing and new live plants in the greenhouse.
Minimum Qualifications:Active student enrollment
Preferred Qualifications:Biology majors or other students with an interest in botany
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Experience or interest in learning plant identification, museum curation, data management, photography, and/or plant care.
