Experiential Leaning:As a Rural Planning Program Intern, you will gain practical experience in urban and regional planning, land use analysis, and housing market assessments. You will develop skills in data collection, stakeholder interviews, and policy analysis, applying theoretical knowledge from your studies to real-world projects that impact rural communities.
Professional Development:This position offers numerous professional development opportunities. You will receive job-specific training provided by the REV Center and participate in University-wide training events. Additionally, you will have access to multicultural-sponsored training activities, career exploration activities via Career Services, and resume reviews with Career Services and/or WorkSource Oregon. These experiences will help you build professional competencies such as project management, communication, and analytical thinking, preparing you for diverse career paths in urban planning, public policy, or community development.
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:– Attend internal project team meetings with faculty and REV staff.
– Provide professional business support such as communications and event planning.
– Conduct correspondence with various entities in a professional manner.
– Complete a Buildable Lands Inventory (BLI) to determine the current status of land in Joseph.
– Develop a housing market analysis using Census data and other sources.
– Conduct interviews with stakeholders in Joseph about housing needs.
– Present findings from the BLI and housing market analysis to the Joseph City Council and Planning Commission.
– Support a housing barriers survey that explores various factors affecting housing.
– Develop a housing policy analysis and offer recommendations to the City of Joseph.
– Summarize tasks into memos and a final report for the City of Joseph.
Minimum Qualifications:– Attending EOU (on-campus or online) and enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credits for undergraduate students or nine (9) credits for graduate students.
– In good academic standing.
Preferred Qualifications:– Professional demeanor in meetings and correspondence.
– Ability to work independently and complete projects to required specifications.
– Attention to detail.
– Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive, etc.
– Proactive in seeking information and communicating with others.
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:– Strong research and analytical skills.
– Effective written and verbal communication skills.
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
– Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn GIS software and other planning-related tools.
