Experiential Learning:Students in this position will gain experience with editing and publishing in both written and multimedia formats for The Voice. Highlights of learning include formulating a sense of industry professionalism; developing a structured and methodical approach to meeting deadlines; practicing standard journalistic ethical practices; and building a publication portfolio for future career opportunities.
Professional Development:In addition to the hands-on daily learning, the student employees will attend the annual Oregon Rural Journalism Conference, attend the career-ready/work-search clinics during the annual EO Career Expo, and engage in career-planning activities with Career Services including resume updates and placement services through WorkSource Oregon.
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:– Attends all staff meetings and brainstorming sessions.
– Supports staff recruitment and management in conjunction with the faculty advisor and EIC.
– Generates written or multimedia content for publication on www.thevoiceofeou.com
– Read copy or proof to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
– Typesetting, page layout, formatting and pagination.
– Verify accuracy of data and obtain copyrights or other legal permissions.
– Assists with design of the front page and news section layout in the print edition.
– Encourages the meeting of deadlines and quality control with newspaper writers.
– Coordinates with the online editor for the placement of stories, including the top stories, in the online edition.
– In the absence of the online editor, assists the faculty advisor with the coordination of section editors publishing the online edition.
Minimum Qualifications:– Currently enrolled at EOU with at least 6 credits (undergraduate) or 9 credits (graduate).
– In good academic standing (GPA 2.0 or higher).
– Pass a background check pending employment offer.
– Completion and/or current enrollment in WR 230: News Writing, HUM 210: Media Lab, HUM 410 Media Lab, other coursework in journalism, and/or the equivalent workforce experience.
Preferred Qualifications:– Successful completion of WR 230: News Writing with a grade of B or better.
– Experience with online educational/work environments interacting with others.
– Demonstrated experience with deadline compliance.
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:– Strong command of English grammar, style, and writing conventions.
– Proficiency in using editing software/tools.
– Prepress processes and operations; media production.
– Coordination of multiple activities aligning with deadlines.
– Cooperation, dependability, and reliability working effectively with others towards shared goals.
– Demonstrated talent for being meticulous and cautious; critically assessing content for accuracy and coherence.
