Work-Search Student Assistant
As a student coach, you will learn how to go about searching and applying for student employment positions including resumes, cover letters, job boards, and networking. As you learn, you will share and guide other students in a peer-to-peer environment under the guidance of the Career Services Department. This position is perfect for students who want to increase their interpersonal communication skills, learn and apply basic helping/coaching skills, and become knowledgeable about job-search resources and best practices.

Experiential Learning: | The student will learn about resumes, cover letters, and how to search for student jobs. The student will share their learning about resumes and job-search methods with other students helping them build an effective resume, cover letter, and how to network with potential employers. Through this job, the student will practice interpersonal communication with their peers verbally and in-writing; learn basic helping skill techniques, and increase their own career readiness by developing their own resume, cover letter, and networking skills. |
Professional Development: | The student will be tasked with learning basic helping skill techniques; resume-building, cover letter-creation concepts and best practices; job-board resources; and networking methods. |
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions: | – Staff and set-up the weekly Work-Search Wednesdays activity from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during enrollment periods fall, winter, and spring terms. – Share basic job-search resources and methods with student job-seekers. – Coach students in resume building tasks such as employment history, articulating job duties, identifying experiential learning experiences, and formatting. – Enable students to develop cover letter content and formatting. – Assist students in the use of career planning tools. – Interact with peers, using essential helping skills (attending, listening, reflecting, encouraging, questioning). |
Minimum Qualifications: | – Currently enrolled at EOU with at least 6 credits (undergraduate) or 9 credits (graduate). – In good academic standing (GPA 2.0 or higher). – Pass a background check pending employment offer. – Demonstrated ability to take initiative and exhibit a high level of reliability |
Preferred Qualifications: | – Experience with using job boards and setting up profiles – Experience with student employment on campus or in a community – Measurable time and energy spent investigating best practices for networking, resumes, and/or cover letters. – Experience applying interpersonal communication techniques in one-on-one or small group settings. |
