Students entering Eastern Oregon University may have college credit awarded for educational experience obtained in the military. Credit will be evaluated and based on the recommendation of the American Council on Education.
Students may receive credit for courses and training taken from non-degree granting organizations such as the military, corporations, labor unions, professional and voluntary associations, and government agencies.
The APEL process provides an opportunity for students to document acquired learning from life/work experiences in a format that can be assessed for academic credit. Within the outcomes of the APEL 390 course, students identify their learning from adult life experiences that correlate with college level achievement in specific disciplines that are available at EOU.
Whether you are a newly admitted freshman or transferring to EOU with prior college coursework, the Admissions and Registrar’s Offices are committed to making every reasonable effort to ensure maximum credit is awarded toward degree completion based on your official transcripts.
Discover how your prior coursework can apply to your program of interest.
Students with military experience, AP coursework, Agency Sponsored Learning, CLEP placement exams, International Baccalaureate achievement, or Sophia and Straighterline credits have the opportunity to earn credit for prior learning experiences!

“I began studying for my bachelor’s degree at 28. As a non-traditional student I had years of life experience in both career and international travel. When Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) was recommended to me by a professor, I was intrigued. It helped me to analyze my prior career and travels from an academic perspective and realize what I had learned in my years outside of the classroom.”
