DEIB Supports CAHSS Resolution to Condemn Bias Incidents on Campus

We, the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) Department at Eastern Oregon University, fully support the CAHSS Resolution denouncing the bias incidents on our campus. Acts of prejudice and discrimination contradict the core values of our university and the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging that we are committed to upholding.

Our dedication to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment for all community members remains steadfast. Every student, faculty, and staff member deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected. Bias incidents not only harm those directly affected but also threaten the integrity of our entire campus community.

This commitment aligns with Eastern Oregon University’s core values and principles in the following ways:

  1. ALTRUISM: We give selflessly to empower one another and the university community through inclusiveness, appreciation, and stewardship.

By combating bias incidents, we demonstrate our commitment to selflessly supporting those who are marginalized or affected by prejudice/discrimination. This fosters a community where everyone feels valued and empowered, reinforcing our dedication to inclusiveness and mutual support.

  2. CIVILITY: We believe in the free and open exchange of ideas, embrace diverse backgrounds, and deliberately seek multiple perspectives.

Addressing and condemning bias incidents is crucial to maintaining a civil and respectful environment where all voices can be heard. It ensures that our campus remains a place where diverse perspectives are welcomed and respected, and where open dialogue can thrive in a safe and respectful learning environment, without fear of discrimination.

  3. DISCOVERY: We honor our heritage and invest in our future with innovation, vision, and creativity.

Tackling bias incidents head-on allows us to learn from these challenges and fosters an environment where innovation and creativity can flourish. By creating a more inclusive community, we encourage the exploration of new ideas and perspectives, which is essential for academic and personal growth.

  4. INTEGRITY: We uphold the foundation of professionalism, honesty, respect, and sincerity in all of our interactions.

Condemning acts of bias is a testament to our commitment to integrity. It ensures that our actions align with our words, demonstrating our dedication to honesty, respect, and sincerity. By addressing bias, we uphold the ethical standards that are the cornerstone of our university community.

  5. INTERDEPENDENCE: We cultivate vibrant connections and relationships to enhance opportunity and success locally and globally.

By fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment, we strengthen the bonds within our community and promote a spirit of collaboration. Addressing bias incidents helps build trust and interdependence among community members, enhancing opportunities for success both within and beyond the university.

  6. QUALITY: We passionately pursue intellectual engagement, academic rigor, and the highest standards in all endeavors.

Ensuring a bias-free environment supports the highest standards of academic and personal excellence. By creating an inclusive atmosphere where all students can thrive, we uphold our commitment to intellectual engagement and academic rigor, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

In alignment with the CAHSS Resolution, we pledge to:

  1. Promote Awareness and Education: We will continue to provide educational programs and training to address issues of bias, discrimination, and systemic inequities. By raising awareness and fostering understanding, we aim to cultivate a more informed and compassionate campus community.
  2. Support Affected Individuals: We are dedicated to offering support and resources to those impacted by bias incidents. Our department will work closely with affected individuals when necessary, to ensure they receive the assistance and advocacy applying a restorative justice approach.
  3. Enhance Reporting and Accountability: We will collaborate with campus partners to improve mechanisms for reporting and addressing bias incidents. Strengthening accountability measures is crucial to addressing and preventing future occurrences.
  4. Foster a Culture of Inclusion: We will collaborate with various campus stakeholders to create and sustain initiatives that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our efforts will focus on building a campus culture where every individual feels empowered to contribute, succeed and belong.

Together, we can make Eastern Oregon University a place where diversity is celebrated, equity is pursued, inclusion is practiced, and everyone feels a sense of belonging.
