LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University (EOU), Oregon’s official Rural University, is pleased to announce it has been featured in a comprehensive case study by the Chronicle of Higher Education. “How a Rural College Works to Prevent Brain Drain,” highlights EOU’s strategies in creating career pathways and fostering local talent retention in eastern Oregon.
With nearly 3,000 students, the university has intentionally played a role in forming strategic partnerships with nonprofit organizations and local school districts, along with regional, state, and federal governments, improving the educational and professional opportunities for students.
One of the key highlights of the Chronicle’s study is the establishment of the Rural Engagement & Vitality (REV) Center. The REV is a joint venture between EOU and local nonprofit Wallowa Resources focusing on community and economic development projects that provide students with real-world experience and job opportunities. The REV Center helps students envision and forge a future in their home region strengthening rural communities by preparing educated, skilled professionals ready to contribute locally.
The case study also showcases how EOU offers several innovative programs aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and workforce development in rural areas. Early College Initiatives programs enable high school students to earn college credits, preparing them for advanced studies and reducing future education costs. The University also provides paid internships that offer crucial work experience and career exposure, equipping students with skills applicable in the job market.
To further bridge education and employment, EOU organizes career expos and development programs that connect students with potential employers and job opportunities within the region. These initiatives are crucial for retaining local talent and preventing the brain drain often seen in rural communities.
EOU is committed to keeping education accessible through substantial financial support and tuition lower than many Oregon universities, ensuring students can manage higher education costs. These comprehensive efforts help position EOU as a leader in transforming the educational landscape for rural communities, providing tailored educational programs and opportunities to meet the unique needs of its community. For more details about Eastern Oregon University’s initiatives and to download the full case study, visit eou.edu/rural-workforce-innovation/.
