LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University’s Spring Symposium will take place on the Eastern Oregon University (EOU) campus Wednesday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community is welcome, and events are free.
Spring Symposium is an annual gathering where students present their scholarship. The event represents an opportunity for students to share their unique contributions to the disciplines they have been studying and to get an approximation of professional conference experience.This year’s presentations include anthropology, biology, chemistry, computer science, costuming, creative writing, education, health and human performance, mathematics, psychology, and rhetoric.
At least 132 students are involved. Some will present information via posters, some will deliver talks, senior Art students will host an open studio, and the musical ensemble 45th Parallel will perform. In addition, EOU will host poster presentations by students from five high schools who are participating in the Oregon Teacher Pathway program.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast in the Loso Lobby. A registration table will provide print schedules to attendees. At 9 a.m. in McKenzie Theater, C J Coffee will present the keynote “Francis J. Grimké: A Forgotten Rhetorical Giant.” The son of a slave and slave owner, Grimké was a prophetic voice against the American racial codes of the early twentieth century. The keynote analyzes nine of Grimké’s published sermons at the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. from 1898 to 1921.
Oregon Teacher Pathway poster sessions will begin at 10:10 a.m. in the Badgley Hall Simmons Gallery and continue until 11:40 a.m.
EOU Poster Sessions will begin at 10:15 a.m. in Loso Lobby and run until 1:15 p.m. Talks start at 10:30 a.m. in Loso classrooms, and finish at 1 p.m.Art Open Studios occur from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the studios on the east side of the Gilbert Center.
45th Parallel will close the day with a performance in Loso Lobby from 1:15 to 1:45 PM. Refreshments will be provided.When finalized, the event schedule will be posted on the EOU website: https://www.eou.edu/symposium/Information about visiting campus is also available: https://www.eou.edu/visitor/
