Alternative Spring Break

A collaboration between Summer Bridge, DEIB, and the EOU Outdoor Adventure Program, Alternative Spring Break is a fully funded experiential learning opportunity centered on relationships between language, culture, land, and power in the U.S. West.

Students selected for the program will earn two credits of WR 310: Land, Language, and Power while visiting diverse community and cultural sites across the Southwest over spring break. Peer mentors helping design and lead the course will earn two credits of WR 410.

Trip dates: Friday, March 22 – Sunday, March 31, 2024

Priority application deadline: Apply through this link by February 16, 2024. Late applications will continue to be accepted as space remains available.

Costs covered by EOU: Tuition, books, lodging, meals, transportation, camping equipment, and field trip fees for all students.

All participating students will be required to attend one group planning meeting in early March and two required class meetings after the trip in early April 2024. Students should be prepared to read and discuss course material during the trip and present final assignments the second and third weeks of spring term.

Please note: This trip will include four nights camping and five nights shared group lodging in hotels and AirBnBs. Tents, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear will be provided on request. Students will have a choice of outdoor activities based on interest and ability, including rock climbing, hikes of varying lengths, and/or sightseeing by foot or by car.
