All Day Field Trip: Preserving Place, Culture, and Identity in Wallowa County

September 12, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:30 pm PDT

Today’s trip takes us first to the historic Maxville town site, where we will be doing archeaological fieldwork with EOU Anthropology professor Rory Becker and Maxville Heritage Founder and Director Gwendolyn Trice.

From there we drive to the town of Wallowa to visit the Nez Perce Wallowa Homeland Project, with presentations by NPWHP staff Josh Sigman and Jacy Sohappy and Systems Ecologist Dr. David Mildrexler from Wallowology.

We’ll be working outside in the forest most of the morning and then will be in the town of Wallowa for the afternoon. We’ll have sack lunches, extra snacks, and beverages on the bus with us. Plan to pack anything else you’ll need to be comfortable away from campus all day and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty while doing archaeological work.

As of this writing, there are NO BATHROOMS up at Maxville. We’ll stop at the closest bathrooms we can on the way (around 9:00) and bring a river toilet with us just in case; otherwise be prepared to go outside or wait until we get to NPWHP after lunch.
